What Subcontractors Have To Say
About Vertix Builders
Vertix Builders has been the proud recipient of the “General Contractor of the Year” by the American Subcontractor Association of Colorado during back-to-back years. The award is presented to the General Contracting company that runs an efficient jobsite, is a reliable partner, schedules efficiently and treats their trade partners fairly. It’s an honor to have this recognition, and we thought it would be equally illuminating to share what our subs have to say about our work in a Q&A format.
Here are some of the comments from our valued colleagues:
How would you describe working with Vertix compared to other general contractors? What makes them different?
- “Vertix Builders takes a team approach with everything they do. There isn’t any finger-pointing when a challenge or issue comes-up. They are always up-front with the way they communicate and if they say they’re going to do something, they do it. It is a relationship-oriented company. Whereas some other GCs are more interested in low bids, Vertix is most interested in delivering a great product.”
- “Vertix is very professional and honest. They have the utmost integrity and never ‘shop numbers’ after they receive a bid, and stand-by what they say.”
- “They have a very unique culture that embodies honesty, trust and friendship. It stems from their owners who are ultimately serious about the work at hand, but they want people to have fun. Every year, they send out creative and fun holiday cards that always get people to laugh and want to maintain a great working relationship. They are a very unique and talented group of people.”
Do you feel Vertix treats you as a true partner, not just a subcontractor, on the project? Do they value your knowledge and expertise?
- “Vertix is a true partner with a great ownership team that establishes a great rapport with owners, superintendents and everyone on the job. They will jump through hoops to get the job done, and look to others to share their expertise.”
- “Absolutely! Whenever a problem comes-up, they never turn their back. They want to find solutions by working together. They are one of a very select few who we can rely on and go to with a problem. They have complete trust in our expertise and are willing to let us do our job.”
- “Yes, they definitely value our expertise. They take on responsibility alongside subs if a situation should arise.
How would you rate Vertix’ supervision and project management compared to other general contractors?
- “The supervision and project management by Vertix is top-notch. The superintendents provide accurate dates and maintain a strict schedule. They’re very fair and don’t throw subcontractors under-the-bus is there’s an issue. I’ve always appreciated the open communication that takes place with all the subcontractors and the ownership.”
- “Five stars! 10 out of 10!”
- “I’d give them a 10.”
What is your level of trust working with Vertix?
- “Our entire company has a very high level of trust working with Vertix. We know that we can speak openly and know that they have everyone’s best interests in mind throughout the duration of a project.”
- “There is a very high level of trust working with Vertix. We can have candid conversations with their owners and the know that they can do the same. There is a tremendous amount of responsibility in construction, and you need ot be able to work with people you trust.”
- “Vertix has earned my complete trust, and I feel that they have the same level of trust in me. We’ve even worked with them without a formal contract in place, which says a lot.” (trust and feel trusted)
Do you feel Vertix supports/defends you to the owners? Do they do this better or worse than other general contractors?
- “Vertix absolutely supports us and defends us, when we’re right. They also aren’t afraid to hold us accountable when we’re wrong, but they do so in a way that creates the best outcome for everyone. Other general contractors aren’t as willing to go-to-bat for subs.”
- “Vertix is on-par or better than other general contractors. My company was responsible for missing a deadline for a major grand opening, and Vertix not only stuck-by-us, but were proactively involved in getting the project completed.”
- “They defend us when owners push-back on change orders. Likewise, they will put serious questions to us when something changes during the course of a project. They are a truthful mediator who wants the best for everyone involved.”
Rate how “fair” Vertix is relative to other general contractors.
- “They’re easily in the top 5 percent when it comes to fairness. There are other general contractors that aren’t as willing to listen and instead put-up-a-fight to get things done. They’re most concerned about cost implications and want to have difficult conversations with an owner. Vertix establishes a high level of trust with the client, which leads to better outcomes for both the owner and the companies working on the project.”
- “They are ultimately fair. They establish a professional and personal working relationship, which is a key to their success. It’s something that obviously doesn’t happen overnight, but they have invested the time to build critical relationships that are based on integrity.”
What is one thing you wish Vertix did a better?
- “Nothing comes to mind. We know they’ll have the very best people on the job. From the top down, they hire good people.”
- “I wish they wanted to grow more aggressively, but that’s a double-edge sword. They wouldn’t be the company they are if the grew too fast. To them, I know it’s quality over quantity. They understand who they are as a general contractor, and what differentiates them. I’d hate to see them lose what makes them special.”
- “It would be nice to see them grow, and bring their talent to other owners and subs.”
Can you provide an example of your positive work with Vertix?
- “We were working on a job that required a green roof. This was at a time that very few people had experience with designing and installing a green roof, so there were a lot of challenges. We all got together with the different manufacturers that were involved and came-up with a plan at the outset that resulted in a very successful outcome. Vertix took on the role of responsibility and didn’t tell anyone to simply “go figure it out” on their own.”
- “We were working on a residential project downtown and it had some challenging site issues. It was a great experience to be at the table with Vertix, the design team and the ownership group, predicting challenges and finding solutions before our work began.”
